Comments: Light rail is, I believe, the single most important infrastructue issue in ensuring the long-term economic viability of the Twin Cities and, by extrapolation, the State of Minnesota. Other cities are leaving us far behind on this critical liveability issue, and many of those cities have better weather. If we're going to compete, we must provide this most basic piece of urban infrastructure. Steve Banks

Comments: Dear folks: I laud efforts to move forward with a bridge, but fully endorse a thoughtful process that accomplishes the three goals outlined here. There is no reason to make the planning process a tortured and bureaucratic affair. It is imperative that the bridge accommodate the LRT with potential for linking downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis with neighborhood north and west. The bridge is a critical link in that plan. Any design for a bridge should add beauty to our downtown and should be a distinctive and exemplary design that will be a major gateway on Interstate 35. Finally, an effort should be made to provide a memorial for those killed and injured in the bridge collapse. Do the right thing by doing them well. Make this bridge something that aspires towards greatness!

Comments: The dead, the injured, and the rescuers must be honored with more than a plaque. The Great River crossing and the University's north/south entry should be celebrated. The LRT can be integrated with this new bridge, creating a funding efficiency that will not be at the expense of the central corridor line. This horrible event's human cost was great and the fiscal expense was not planned for. By re-routing the LRT's river crossing from Washington Ave to 35W the planned cost of the Washington Ave bridge upgrades and reinforcement may help to offset the new bridge's costs. This re-routing would allow for stops at the high density Dinkytown and dorm areas along University Ave, and at the historic entrance to the campus. It would also remove the cost of the proposed tunnel under Washington Ave., which has been a major stumbling block. This new bridge must be done right! The victims must be honored. The central corridor line must not be affected!

Comments: We desperately need to move forward with public transportation. To not do so would be a slap in the face to future generations. The current public transportation system in Minnesota is disgraceful and embarrassing. Let's not let right fanatics embarrass us any further. Why not build a rail line from Minneapolis to Duluth as well. I say full speed ahead with comprehensive rail service for all Minnesotans!

Comments: I feel that light rail is imperative and the design of the bridge could be an opportunity for innovative safety, as well as design. Pushing through the bidding process in a hurried manner will only hinder the success of these issues and Minneapolis will come up short.

Comments: We really need some details before getting on this "fast track." If the light rail comes down University and joins 35W- exactly where does it enter/exit Will houses be lost How can you widen the lanes without taking vegetation (that we planted and need for sound/pollution mitigation) or housing How/where will the 10 lanes be narrowed and joined to the adjacent 8 lanes What route will the LRT take since Washington Ave is now off the table - Dinkytown trench Univ Ave/4th St. are too narrow and busy. It is our desire to return both to 2 way traffic. Can we use some of this new transportation money to fianlly get a stioplight at 6th & University SE It would seem that the vacant site at 10th & University could be used for an LRT station- it's available!

Comments: Design of the new bridge must make provision for some long-planned connections detailed in the Marcy-Holmes Master Plan: 1. The "Missing Link" connecting Main Street SE to East River Road, 2. A bike path from the Stone Arch Bridge to Dinkytown along existing tracks, and 3. Extension of Granary Parkway from the Southeast Minneapolis Industrial area to 35W without disrupting neighborhood traffic.
