                The Pledge for Fiscal Responsibility

We the people believe in the Spirit of America evoked by John F. Kennedy on January 20, 1961 when he said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

And in that same Spirit of America, we step forward to do what we can do to help America in her hour of fiscal need.

And under that spirit, we agree with the following principles:

  • We support the concept that America is a fiscally responsible nation that pays its bills on time.
  • We fully support a balanced approach to reducing America’s national debt that includes spending cuts AND tax increases.
  • We agree that spending cuts alone cannot solve America’s debt crisis.
  • We support a tax increase on Americans with a taxable income exceeding $250,000 a year.
  • We would consider supporting tax increases on lower incomes, if necessary to reduce America’s national debt.
  • We reaffirm support for the 14th Amendment which states in part that “the public debt of the United States…shall not be questioned” or ever held hostage again.
  • We reject the tax-cutting, borrow-and-spend policies of the Bush administration that pushed America to the brink of financial disaster, and forced the next administration to choose between certain fiscal collapse or huge stimulus spending that could only lead to deeper deficits and debt.
