Dear all,

This is a message about impending changes to the Arts Centre. As part of a broader re-organisation of the Exhibitions team, the post of Exhibitions Technician is going to be replaced by a more generalist post of ‘Visual Arts technician’, which will involve a broader range of duties for lower pay.

How will this development affect you? In brief, the creation of a more generalist post with a wider range of responsibilities means that it will in all likelihood become more difficult to attract the world class artists that the Aber Arts Centre has always been able to bring to Aber. Situated in a small town in rural Wales, the Arts Centre has always punched above its weight in terms of bringing top names to Aberystwyth. Celebrated artists often demand that time and personal attention is given to the organisation of their project, otherwise they will exhibit somewhere else. Within a more generalist post such dedication will become more difficult, affecting in the long-term the overall quality of projects brought to Aberystwyth.

The presence of a well-run, top-quality Arts Centre is the linchpin of cultural life in Aber, so if you appreciate the excellent and diverse projects the centre has been able to organise over the years, take courses, or generally enjoy visiting the Arts Centre, please take a minute to sign this petition. To recap, the petition opposes the generalized down grading of the Arts Centre staff and in particular opposes making the role of Exhibitions Technician redundant since this will adversely affect the ability of the Arts Centre to attract top quality exhibitions and artists. A world-class Arts Centre requires adequate support so that high-standards can be upheld for the benefit of both the student and public experience alike.

Thank you,
