2011-2012 AISD High School Curriculum Petition The signers of this petition agree that the curriculum that the school is required to teach does not promote learning but rather prepares students to meet the standard on state assessments. We do not see the curriculum preparing the students for life after high school regardless if they decide to go to college, trade school or straight to work. We believe that not enough time is provided for teachers to teach the curriculum in an understandable and in-depth manner. We ask that the curriculum be geared towards helping the students understand what they are learning and how it relates to life after graduation. We are concerned that teachers must deliver instruction in a fast paced manner in order to at minimum introduce the skills/concepts to the students. The students do not have time to practice the skills as needed to gain mastery. All of our textbooks talk about “the student will gain mastery in....”. This is a myth. At best we gain a glimpse of what the subject is. We also agree that teachers assigned to teach a certain subject should have the capacity to teach said subject, which is stated on the 2008 version of the Public Education Mission, Goals, and Objectives statement. “Qualified and highly effective personnel will be recruited, developed, and retained.” The signers of this petition understand that the schools, teachers and administrators do not have a choice concerning the curriculum that the State of Texas is requiring them to teach. Our intended purpose for this petition is to encourage students, teachers and parents to speak out and bring awareness to the following: The lack of a satisfactory state curriculum. The lack of time to learn. The lack of time to teach. The lack of time to apply what we learn. Our learning is more than just a “test”.
