Fellow Americans, As of March 1st, 2013 both the Senate and House of Representatives have successfully "failed" to compromise and prevent $85 billion dollars in spending cuts from taking effect that will once again damage the economic health and security of our nation. This “do nothing” approach and total lack of accountability for their actions has become an all too common political tactic employed by the majority in Congress and has created a culture of obstructionism that has become a major impediment to economic growth in America. Furthermore, the favoring of the poor by the majority of Democrats in Congress and the favoring of the rich by the majority of Republicans in Congress has created a tremendous burden on the middle class which is, and has always been, the engine that drives the American economy. As a result of the “rubber stamping” and resistance to compromise over the last 12 years and counting, a drastic change must now occur in order to preserve the future of America and its ability to maintain its position as a superpower and world leader. Those in Congress who favor antiquated thought over progressive thinking and status quo over positive change are destroying the political fabric of our democracy. Additionally, the catering to special-interest groups by “our” public servants is creating gridlock at an unprecedented level, while simultaneously splintering the nation and effectively killing the American Dream. These elected officials are out of touch with the needs of America and legitimate change is the only logical answer to this constant, debilitating problem. If the U.S. Congress can pass the 22nd Amendment (March 21, 1947) to limit the number of terms a U.S. president may serve, then the time is ripe (and overdue) to secure a term limit referendum on the 2016 general election ballot in order to prevent current/future U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives from becoming career politicians and further stifling America's economic progress. Let it be legislated as law by the U.S. Congress and adopted as a new Constitutional Amendment that: • U.S. Senators be limited to (2) six year terms and U.S. Representatives be limited to (3) two year terms pending re-election to each successive term. A U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative will not be allowed to run for congressional office in future mid-term and general elections once they have reached their term limit e.g. a former U.S. Senator cannot run for a future U.S. Senate or U.S. Representative seat in any state. Likewise, a U.S. Representative cannot run for a future U.S. Representative or U.S. Senate seat in any state. If a U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative has already served their term limits as of the 2016 general election cycle, they will be allowed to run for re-election in the 2016 cycle but they cannot run for re-election in any subsequent mid-term or general elections. This is a one-time allowance. In supporting a term limits for U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives, you are: • Ensuring that America will no longer be subjected to self-serving, ineffective “household name” incumbent Congressmen and Congresswomen for an indefinite period of time. • Effectively opening up windows of opportunity for potential candidates to run for elected office by leveling the playing field in terms of not having to run against incumbents who are extremely well financed by special-interest groups. • Creating a more constructive and effective political environment by guaranteeing a systematic turnover in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives that will bring about a greater influx of eager and progressive members of Congress. If you agree with this position, take action and sign the aforementioned petition. The ultimate goal is to secure the term limit referendum on every 2016 general election ballot nationwide. It’s an opportunity to make a difference so let your voice be heard. The choice is yours!
