On June 10th, Governor Perry added regulation of abortion procedures, providers and facilities to the call for the special session. The wording of his proclamation is broad enough to allow the Legislature to take up any of the harmful bills already filed.

“If Governor Perry is actually worried about the health of Texans, he should focus on expanding Medicaid, not restricting women’s reproductive health,” said Heather Busby, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Texas. “The bills Perry hopes to pass through the special session were too extreme to pass during the regular session. It is a shame that our state leadership prioritizes the regulation of women’s bodies over the pressing needs of Texans.”

The bills now eligible for consideration include an unconstitutional 20-week ban. This extreme ban lacks an adequate exception to protect the health of the woman and, if passed, would prohibit safe abortion care after 20 weeks for women in tragic situations. A similar Arizona law was recently struck down in federal court, but that won’t stop anti-choice politicians in Texas.

NARAL Pro-Choice Texas believes that medical regulations should be written by public health professionals—not politicians. Health experts are in the best position to determine effective requirements that ensure safe, high quality, and hygienic care for patients.

If you agree, please sign our petition and share it with your friends and family! We need to show Governor Perry that we won't stand for having our access to safe, necessary medical procedures legislated away!
