National movement and youth volunteer charity Team V at vInspired are currently campaigning to transform unloved community spaces in their local areas. On their search to find a space to work with, the Birmingham Team have come across some areas in their city which they have found are looking less than pretty - and all this is down to the simple human inflicted pest known as LITTER!

Food Litter specifically is identified as a problem in the Local Environmental Quality Survey of England (LEQSE) carried out by Keep Britain Tidy. As more and more people eat ‘on the go’ there is an increase in the amount of food litter on the street.

Research carried out by Keep Britain Tidy reveals a quarter of our streets are strewn with cast off food cartons, drink cans, pizza boxes and chip wrappers, yet in 2003 it stood at just 16%. The survey also reveals that most rubbish is either dropped at lunchtime when workers make the daily dash out of the office for a bite to eat or after dark when pubs and clubs have closed and the midnight munchies set in. Their most recent campaign received a 31% reduction in key areas surveyed across England.

However litter is still a problem in some smaller suburb areas of Birmingham, and this makes our city look unattractive and dirty - and why would we want that.

It's really easy and simple to keep the city clean, and all we have to do is dispose of our litter properly. We want to feel proud of where we live and are sure you would too

If you hate litter as much as Team V does then help us pledge to keep our city clean and sign the petition below so we can inform our local Councillors about the issue and get them to take action!
