Reclaiming a Landmark When the Taos County Courthouse Complex was constructed in 1970, it featured a cutting-edge “International” design style and was awarded for its “Architectural Excellence” by the New Mexico Arts Commission: the first buildings in Taos to win such an award. In the past few years, the Complex has fallen on hard times. Maintenance has been deferred and its intrinsic value overlooked. Despite its current condition, the Complex along with its Main Courtroom remains viable, and if recycled and preserved, can continue to serve the residents of Taos County. We, as the undersigned, believe that there is still good use in the existing Courthouse Complex, and are petitioning the Taos County Commissioners to re-examine how it may be preserved. Whether as a cultural center for the arts, theater, offices, space for local non-profits, or a venue for indoor or outdoor festivals and performances, this Complex should not face the wrecker’s ball before its true and important value is understood.
