H.E. Lt. Girma Woldegiorgis
Honorable President
Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
Thursday, August 30, 2007
Your Excellency Mr. President,
I would like to begin by extending my greetings to you and hope for your well-being in all aspects. As President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, you have the right to grant a pardon to any Ethiopian provided under the Federal Constitution Chapter 7, Article 71, Sub-Article 7 which states:
“He shall, in accordance with conditions and procedures established by law, grant pardon.”
Mr. President,
I am respectfully requesting that you grant Ato Tamrat Layne a complete pardon. Ato Tamrat Layne, as you know, was the transitional Prime Minister of Ethiopia from 1991-1995. Previously, he also served as the Chairman of the Ethiopian Peoples Democratic Movement, later renamed the Amhara National Democratic Movement, a member of the 4-party EPRDF coalition. Tamrat Layne was and still is a national legacy for those who knew him.
I, however, do not know him. But I know of him and his brave actions which are commendable to fight against the Communist Government of Ethiopia which used the barrel of a gun as its primary language. Furthermore, citing an article of the Addis Fortune written by Tamrat G. Giorgis, the people of Sekota want Tamrat Layne pardoned. An important point from the article was a quote:
“Tamrat was not accused of undermining the constitution as is the case with opposition leaders,” said a senior official of the regional administration. “I believe their request is fair and it needs to be given serious consideration.”
I thank you for giving due attention to my brief letter. Please also take note of the signatories underneath.
With all best wishes,
