Recently Macy's announced that they will be opening for business on Thanksgiving Day and l have to say that I am disgusted by this disturbing trend I'm seeing of retailers not giving holidays the respect they deserve. I think it is extremely hypocritical of retail in general to be promoting family togetherness at home over the holidays in their advertising while preventing their employees from spending time with their families to work in the stores. Additionally, not only are workers losing time with their families, but they are also having to put up with the chaos generated by impatient, rushing shoppers who often are so wrapped up in their shopping that they forget the rules of holiday goodwill. The definition of the word holiday is "a day set aside by law or statute as exempt from regular labor or business activities, usually to celebrate or commemorate something that happened on or near that date." What's next, working on Christmas Day or New Year's Day? Is nothing sacred? Seriously, if the federal government, schools and so forth can give time off to their employee's to spend time with their families and pay respects to to these above mentioned holidays and others (4th of July, Veteran's Day, ect), so can retail and THEY SHOULD! I am revolted by this and am seriously considering taking my business elseware and I strongly encourage others to do the same. The goal of this petition is to call attention to this issue and eventually find some way that compels retail stores to close for all holidays. Most of us at some point have worked in the retail/customer service industry and have worked on some holiday. And I'm sure when you have worked on a day when everyone else is off from work and spending time with their loved ones, you have felt that twinge of annoyance/exasperation/sadness at not being able to be with them. If you have been in that situation or know someone who has, you should sign this petition to let retailers know that this is wrong and to take back the holidays!
