In recent years, BET has aired a TV special in association with the charity Black Girls Rock. Throughout this TV special, many of the leading black women in the music industry perform. In 2011, I argue it is time for BET to acknowledge the independent talents of artists such as Syleena Johnson and Tweet, who have collaborated on a song entitled 'Angry Girl' for Syleena's new album 'Chapter V: Underrated', released Sept. 27. In the 2010 TV special, an overwhelming majority of the performers were signed to major labels. But what about the equally as talented, under-promoted independent artist? Shouldn't BET acknowledge them too?
