Given the inextricable link between palm oil production and the survival of orangutans, it is imperative that manufacturers increase their use of certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO). It is also imperative that manufacturers committed to using CSPO realize consumers are aware of their commitment, support their efforts and expect them to follow through. Before consumers can effectively communicate these points, they must be able to determine if: - Palm oil is an ingredient in the product they are buying (palm oil is often “hidden” under other ingredient names – see the list of palm oil euphemisms in the Background Materials section). - The manufacturer of the palm oil product is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). - In addition to being a member of the RSPO, the product manufacturer has committed to using 100% certified sustainable palm oil by 2015. Once empowered with this information, consumers can drive the market for certified sustainable palm oil by sharing their preferences for orangutan-friendly products with manufacturers.
