Dear Senior Management Group,
The students of York University recognise that Climate Change and resource depletion are massive problems facing our future and that universities are uniquely placed to lead Britain into a 'Greener', more sustainable society. The University of York has no paid member of staff dedicated to sustainability, unlike our peers (4/5 of the universities above and below us in the league tables have at least one paid member of staff), and has failed to be sufficiently ambitious in its plans for new, truly sustainable buildings on Heslington East, whilst gaining positive publicity from the 'green' development. Therefore the students of York request the Senior Management Group to take sustainability seriously, by
-appointing a paid, senior member of the administration to be solely dedicated to overseeing a sustainability strategy on campus; with resources available to fulfill this brief.
-formulating feasible yet ambitious plans to reduce energy, resource consumption and waste; creating targets for these plans with target dates so that the university can be held to account; and embedding sustainability throughout the curriculum.
- and supporting students and staff in their efforts to implement positive change.
The students urge the university to have a good environmental policy, so that we can be proud to study at a forward-thinking institution, and be reassured for our future.
Yours sincerely,
Students at York University
