| 182 | Amy Pia | There is a huge need for environmental focus and awareness on this campus. My classmates and I see an extraordinary amount of wasted resources here (primarily energy) that is only matched by the possible opportunities for increased sustainability. Solar power, and green roofs alone could cut energy costs down to nearly nothing for the school, quickly making up for up front costs.
The climate and geography of Louisiana put LSU in a unique position of having the opportunity to be a leader in the sustainability field. I think it is about time we take advantage of it. |

As energy prices rise, it makes sense to invest in energy conservation measures, greener policies, etcetera. It also allows LSU to lead the way in an emerging industry, new technology and popular public policy. Also, because LSU is such a large and broad institution, these new technologies will not be effectively implemented by chance; a full time coordinator could ensure the program succeeds and LSU gets the recognition it deserves for taking the lead on sustainability issues. |

| 196 | Matthew Martina | As LSU students we are NOT encouraged to recycle, turn off lights, carpool or investigate where products we or the university uses comes from. Picking up trash after football games isn't enough. Instructors in my own building throw away tons of scrap paper instead of recycling. Meanwhile we spend millions on building renovations that as far as I know involve no official effort to lessen the environmental impact caused by construction and increasing a building's size and use. These things matter in a very big way. We cannot afford to listen to national media regarding our own environmental situation here at home. Our school has 10s of 1000s of students, faculty and staff and we create such an impact as one entity - LSU. Because we are now in the national spotlight as a university, thanks in part to the success of our Athletic programs, we have an oppurtunity and a responsiblity to future students, the future of our school, the state of Louisiana and its current and future residents, as well as ourselves, to push for change in how ALL things are typically done. This is not a rant but a realization of the potential LSU has at its fingertips. Thank you |
