The petition

The implementation of the framework agreement has resulted in a pay cut for many ATs in SOCCUL and Humanities. In February the University shut down the appeals procedure and promised a full review of the treatment of ATs.

We call for The University:

1. To set up this review transparently and with all speed. This review should report by September 2008.

2. To give ATs direct representation on this review group

3. To Negotiate in good faith with unions and elected AT representatives:

a. To correct this cut in pay
b. To review the HERA grading of ATs at 5, which does not adequately reflect the work undertaken by HUMS AND SOCCUL ATs at Sussex.

4. To continue to honour the pre- October 2007 pay deal for tutors who have lost out as a result of the restructuring until January 2009. This will allow:

a. For a considered report to be produced, with adequate time for consultation
b. ATs to agree to teach in the autumn with certainty about their levels of pay

We feel that these demands are reasonable and proportionate and reflect not only the important role ATs play in the University, but also the minimum standard of good management acceptable from an institution of higher education.
