| 666 | James Nugent | Why is it that the Government of Canada demands that First Nations 'negotiate with good will' when they are clearly not able to do the very same (e.g. they continue to allow developers to carry on with constructions while 'negotiations of good will' are supposed to be proceeding. The the government is surprised when leaders such as Shawn Brant stand up and resist. How can the Government of Canada be both the prosecutor and the judge in these trials? Where is the justice in that? Meanwhile, they refuse to sign international treaties related to indigenous peoples. |

| 678 | Wayne A. Coppin | On September 13, 2007, the United Nations passed the Universal Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It took the UN over 20 years to create, discuss, and pass this declaration. In the final vote, 143 nations voted for indigenous rights. Only 4 countries voted against. The four countries who voted against were Canada, the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand.
When a government decides that it has the right to either abrogate or bestow your human rights, then that government has exceeded its authority. At that point, every individual has a DEMOCRATIIC AND MORAL RESPONSIBILITY to oppose that government and do whatever is necessary to regain our human rights. They belong to us and not the state, folks. |
| 679 | Amber Hockin | Both the LIberal and before that the Conservative governments in Ontario have treated First Nations issues and in particular land claim issues with shocking arrogance and cruel neglect. These approaches have had terrible consequences for communities on and around First Nations territories.
It comes as no surprise to me that people who are as oppressed as many First Nations in Canada will eventually be left with no choice but to protest their treatment, for themselves and their families.
It is time for the government of Ontario, including the Crown Prosecution Office to act fairly, without prejudice, racism or malice towards First Nations peoples.

| 681 | Gregory Fraser | Canadians thought Apartheid was terrible,so why jail some one in Canada for fighting the same thing?Even the United Nations gave Canada a scathing review on how First Nations people are mistreated and cheated by the Government.Ask for a medical clinic and they build a Liquor Store.Ask for clean drinking water and the Feds and the Province bicker over who is responsible for it instead of turning on a tap and filling 20 barrels of water for school children. If it was their children, they would have water inside of 2 hours. It seems that empathy has gone out of style. |

| 684 | Cynthia Oka | The law that is now persecuting Shawn Brant for resisting the theft and exploitation of his people's lands is the same colonizer law whose aim is to create a white capitalist Canada. This law is fundamentally unjust and we demand Shawn Brant's immediate release and the stay of all charges against him. |

Guardianship is our legacy. There is no crime committed, defending what is sacred, in the lore of the Creator. Shawn Brant is a lore abiding citizen, & exercises his his responsibilities with integrity.
Free Shawn Brant now!! |

or, to requote Bonni Stafford, who was comment #62, 'cause I identify and can't say it better:
"It is time to treat First Nations People with the dignity and respect they deserve. As a decendant of settlers to this land, I demand our Government honour the treaties and agreements made in good faith. You continue to bring shame on us in the eyes of the International Community as well as in this Country. It is way past the time to do the right thing. Do it now for all of our sakes."
Free Shawn Brant.... and then start fixing the issues that led him to this place in the beginning. |
