Comments: As a native of Dallas and an SMU supporter I am strongly in favor of SMU gaining the prestige that only a select few universities in the country can claim and that is having a Presidential Library on campus.

Comments: I am shocked that anyone could be so short sighted, partisan and historically challenged that they would be against a Presidential Library on the SMU campus. It always has been and should always be an honor for any campus or community to host such an important part of our country's history. I am proud to sign this petition!

Comments: I am often accused by friends of being a leftist kook and I also happen to attend a Methodist church, but I think it is incredibly myopic to protest SMU's acquisition of a Presidential Library. Claiming that the Methodist name will be sullied by association with a failed president whose politics and policies we might not like or even think are un-Christian, is like saying the Methodist church agrees with and is associated with every opinion expressed on SMU's campus, which is ridiculous. Locating his library at a vibrant university that values freedom of speech, the Socratic method, and vigorous debate is a good thing for SMU -- perhaps the best decision President Bush will have made in 8 years.

Comments: As a former Methodist and graduate of SMU, I have been looking forward to the opportunity for SMU to have a Presidential Library. If you aren't going to have George W. Bush who is a Methodist and his First Lady was a student at SMU, then who's library are you going to have No President has ever been clean enough for these people and no one ever will be. The far reaching left portion of the Methodist church is the reason why I left that church. Without a moral compass, they just go off tilting at windmills without ever addressing the real problems of the church. This just makes me realize just how right I was to leave.

Comments: This would be great for Smu and we may never get the opportunity again to have a Presidential Library. I do not view the LBJ Library at UT as a "political lightning rod" and LBJ also ran an unpopular war that had massive, sometimes violent street protests. Once President Bush serves out his term the Bush Haters will move on to some other cause, but SMU will have a wonderful new asset for decades that will provide great opportunities to have open and free discussions about international and domestic political issues.

Comments: This country was founded on principles of freedom including freedom of speech. So while I appreciate the sentiments of those voicing their opinions against the Bush Library, I can't help but think that their judgment is so clouded by their political leanings that they're not pausing to consider the positive implications of having the Bush Library at SMU. Considering recent history, acquiring the library would go a long way towards restoring the University to a position of regional prominence. Passing on this opportunity would turn off much of the local population (not to mention donors) and doom the University to mediocrity. Remember, one of our primary goals is to reconnect with the Dallas (and North Texas region) community at large. The Bush Library gives SMU that opportunity like never before. This library will be responsible for tens of thousands of visitors each year who would otherwise have no compelling reason to visit SMU. If we do our job right, there's no reason why visitors wouldn't be sold on the many other charms of the university -- cultural, the arts, adult education and sports. How many visiting students might then aspire to choose SMU for their college experience The fact is, SMU needs a compelling, competitive advantage against regional public schools (like UNT) whose offering has improved immensely in recent years, as well as private schools like Baylor and TCU who have benefited tremendously from the awareness generated by the success of their athletic programs.

Comments: SMU is too good a school to be associated with this bookmobile. Building this embarrassment will make SMU a national punchline, and will stand forever as a middle-finger salute to the very idea of "education" at a great university.

Comments: Thank you for this opportunity to support our President and in some small way enable bringing a prestigious addition to our city in having this library built here. He and Laura have been a class act, unlike most of their opponents. It is one thing to oppose someone...it's another to do it in a rational responsible way and certainly the radicals have not done this.

Comments: Petitoning against Bush is fee speech. $200 to $500 million for a presidential library is obscene regardless of who's library. Bush has done nothing deserving of a Library connected with a church school. The Bush library should be seperated from any church affilaton. To even discuss building a library at this critcal occasion in the Mideast and this country is absurd. Lane Luttrell Methodist
