Name: Cathy Hutson on Jul 25, 2007Comments: I participated in NHD 7 years and went to Washington DC 3 of those years. I definitely feel that while doing NHD I learned and accomplished more than I ever did in a history class. This is a very important extra-curricular activity and the money is definitely needed.Flag

Name: Melinda Kernik on Jul 25, 2007Comments: The History Day program provides an amazing opportunity to introduce students to the basics of historical research - something that is severely lacking in our current history programs. Instead of simply taking lessons from a textbook, it challenges participants to examine primary resources and to look at multiple sides of complex issues. Another aspect of the program emphasizes presenting information in the most effective manner (something useful regardless of whether of not the student plans to continue in the field of history) The skills I learned through National History Day have carried over into how I pick topics for geology papers and organize information for class presentations as well as encouraged me to pursue a history major. I wholeheartedly support this program.Flag

Name: Michelle Prieb on Jul 25, 2007Comments: I participated in National History Day at the regional, state and national level for several formative years when I was younger. I've always considered the experience extremely valuable - and I consider it my first experience with qualitative research. I am a media researcher now, so it is priceless to cite my childhood experience conducting qualitative interviews with 50 local female, former telephone switchboard operators asking them about the role that they and the party-line played in their communities lives and communication habits. The opportunity to do projects like this at a young age is certainly something that should be funded and encouraged for students of all ages. Please support this opportunity for experiential learning - these kinds of programs are invaluable for students!!Flag

It taught me so much and even now in college I am using the skills I learned due to the program. As George Santayana said "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."Flag

In college, I realized that all those long hours working on History Day projects and papers really paid off. I was way ahead of classmates, most of whom had never prepared such major reports.Flag

Name: Jessica Giles on Jul 26, 2007Comments: I participated in History Day when I was in 6th grade, and because of the topic I chose, I realized what my calling was in life. Now I am fulfilling it. And when people ask me, "How did you know that this was for you" I literally say, "Well when I was in 6th grade, I did this History Day project over China. And I've had a passion for China and her people ever since." I am in China right now, fulfilling what I've been called to do here. Please keep History Day alive so others will have a testimony like me. Sincerely, Jessica (Fite) GilesFlag

I have recently graduated from law school at the University of Oklahoma and the skills that I developed while researching and writing for National History Day have served me well over the past 3 years and will continue to assist me years into the future. This is truely a program that deserves funding on a national level.Flag

Congress approved National History Day in 2004, Senator Specter, and now we need your leadership to financially support the program. Please support this appropriation.Flag
