What Jacob did was questionable, but he doesn't deserve this fiasco. This entire situation is ridiculous and it is BLSA and those who support their position in this matter who should be ashamed for putting all of us in the position they have.Flag

He issued an apology and that should be MORE than sufficient. Not only should the administration stay out of it, Jacob should NOT even consider resigning.Flag

Name: Shelley Luke on Nov 10, 2005State: LACountry: USComments: I support Jacob 100%. He should not have to resign or be forced from a position that he has earned through student elections. BLSA is being completely irrational. Their recent actions of making a private matter public have not only tarnished the image of the Law Center, but have also created a divide in the student body. I am ashamed to know the true colors of some of my colleagues. I am embarrassed that our faculty has taken such an adverse position against a student. I am disgusted that the resonse of our chancellor consists of nothing more than empty threats and coercion. Please support Jacob. It was an innocent mistake that he has apologized profusely for. He has been punished enough. His future should not be ruined for something as silly as this and his character should not be called into question.Flag

However, the difference merits distinction: ethnicity is innately tied to history, whereas race is traditionally a biological concept. Thus, much as the offensiveness of Jacob's email is tied to history, so too should the value of Jacob's apology be considered in light of his history at the law center. Over the two plus years I have known him, this markedly publicized incident stands in isolation amongst the silent mass of benefits Jacob has provided the Law Center in various leadership roles. Presently, some are determined to decide JacobFlag

That alone speaks volumes as to his personal character and leadership capabilities. Many of our nation's greatest leaders have made mistakes far worse than Jacob's without offering a public apology or future plan of action as Jacob has done yet we allow(ed) them to remain in their respective elected offices.Flag

For all the talk of sensitivity, Jacob's detractors don't care at all about how they are affecting someone's life, all for a bit of political hype. Jacob would do whatever he can to help a student in need, whether that student be black, white, mexican, nepalese, or pakistani. Let's be fair and realize that EVERYONE makes mistakes.Flag

Name: Ben Langford on Nov 11, 2005State: LACountry: USComments: I feel that this is an attempt to destroy one man's career based on a simple and admittedly immature mistake...a "witch-hunt" if you will. I feel it is important to put things into perspective and openly discuss these issues as free-thinking and educated adults. Bringing the press into the picture and screaming "racism" at the drop of a hat only seeks to develop a further division between demographic groups at the law center. As a staunch defender of our First Amendment right to free speech, it seems as if some at our university believe that some forms of speech are more free than others. I also feel it is important to understand the difference between humor and true hatred. Without such an understanding, it would be very easy to label Richard Pryor as a "racist" or Mel Brooks as an "anti-semite." If that last sentence made no sense, I highly suggest to the reader that he (or she, to be politically correct) stop taking him(or her)self so seriously and enjoy one of the gifts that distinguishes the human race from the other beasts that roam this earth: the gift of laughter. Just remember...not everyone will laugh at the same jokes. Some may even be offended. There will always be a group that is overly-sensitive. That is no reason to try to attempt to destroy a man's career. If you don't believe me, just ask Lenny Bruce.Flag

Jacob has worked hard for several years and will continue to do so and should be given the opportunity to prove his commitment to the law school and its ENTIRE student body.Flag

For the administration to remove Jacob Gardner from his post would be an admission that the SBA is little more than a puppet organization. We, as students, elected Jacob Gardner. We should be the ones to decide his fate. Thank you, Robyn HaganFlag
