Supporting Brussels Airlines in Opposing the Settlements: A Message from Jews and Israelis in Belgium

We, the undersigned, wish to express our support of Brussels Airlines’ decision to remove a product that was manufactured in an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank from its catering menu. As Israeli and Diaspora Jews living in Belgium, as well as Belgian Jews, we are extremely concerned with the ongoing policy of the Israeli governments to deepen the occupation of the West Bank by expanding the illegal settlements in the region. We therefore support the compliance of Belgian companies with the EU regulation to inform consumers on products that have been produced in the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, and we support a removal of such products from the EU market.

As many of us fly often, both to Tel-Aviv and other destinations serviced by Brussels Airlines, we applaud this decision and will recommend others to use their services. We can reassure the company that its business activity will not be damaged despite the vocal and coordinated calls of some right-wing groups and politicians to boycott the company.

We were also appalled by the fact that the reports on the incident in the Israeli media and Jewish media outlets have omitted a fact clearly indicated in the original press release on the issue: the complaint that requested Brussels Airlines to remove the product due its origin in an illegal settlement was sent by an Israeli passenger. We believe this omission was not incidental, as the Israeli government along with mainstream media outlets are intensively trying to silence all critical voices, within Israel and in Jewish communities around the world, who oppose Israel’s occupation and settlement policy. By supporting Brussels Airlines decision, we also express our aspiration to see an end to the occupation, a dismantling of the settlements and the granting of full and equal rights to all Palestinians, which is the only way to achieve a just peace in the region.

En soutien à Brussels Airlines pour s’opposer aux colonies : un message de Juifs et Israéliens de Belgique

Nous, les soussignés, nous tenons à exprimer notre soutien à la décision de Brussels Airlines de retirer de ses menus un produit manufacturé dans une colonie israélienne illégale située en Cisjordanie occupée. En tant que citoyens israéliens et Juifs vivant en Belgique, nous sommes extrêmement concernés par la politique continue des gouvernements israéliens pour renforcer l’occupation en Cisjordanie par l’extension des colonies illégales dans la région. Nous soutenons donc le respect par les compagnies belges des règlements européens en matière d’information des consommateurs sur les produits issus des colonies illégales en territoires occupés, et nous soutenons en outre le retrait de ces produits du marché européen.

Comme nombre d’entre nous volent souvent, à la fois vers Tel-Aviv et vers d’autres destinations desservies par Brussels Airlines, nous applaudissons la décision de la compagnie et recommanderons ses services. Nous voulons rassurer Brussels Airlines sur le fait que son activité commerciale ne sera pas touchée malgré les appels de certains groupes et politiciens d’extrême droite à boycotter la compagnie aérienne.

Nous sommes également effarés de constater que les articles et reportages sur le sujet dans les médias israéliens et juifs ont oublié un élément clairement publié dans le communiqué de presse original sur le sujet : la plainte demandant à Brussels Airlines de retirer ce produit à cause de sa provenance d’une colonie illégale a été émise par un passager israélien. Nous pensons que cet oubli n’est pas accidentel, vu que le gouvernement israélien et les médias dominants essayent en permanence de faire taire ceux qui, en Israël ou dans les communautés juives à travers le monde, s’opposent à la politique israélienne d’occupation et de colonisation. En soutenant la décision de Brussels Airlines, nous exprimons également notre soutien aux actions non-violentes destinées à mettre un terme à l’occupation, à démanteler les colonies et à accorder des droits entiers et égaux à tous les Palestiniens, ce qui représente la seule façon selon nous d’atteindre une paix juste dans la région.

Steun aan Brussels Airlines in hun verzet tegen de nederzettingen: een bericht van de Joden en Israëli’s van België

Wij, ondergetekenden, willen graag onze steun betuigen aan Brussels Airlines. Zij hebben immers beslist om een product uit hun menu te schrappen omdat het in een illegale Israëlische nederzetting in de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever wordt geproduceerd. Wij zijn een groep van Israëlische Joden en Joden uit de diaspora die in België verblijven en Belgische Joden en maken ons grote zorgen over het voortdurende beleid van de Israëlische regeringen om de bezetting van de Westelijke Jordaanoever te versterken door meer en meer nederzettingen neer te planten in de regio. Daarom steunen we de Belgische bedrijven die de Europese regelgeving respecteren en klanten op de hoogte brengen wanneer producten in de Israëlische nederzettingen in de bezette Palestijnse gebieden worden geproduceerd. We zijn dan ook voorstander van een verwijdering van deze producten uit de Europese markt.

Aangezien wij vaak gebruik maken van de diensten van Brussels Airlines om naar Tel Aviv of naar één van hun andere bestemmingen te vliegen, juichen we deze beslissing toe. Verder zullen we Brussels Airlines ook actief aan onze kennissen aanraden. Zo kunnen we het bedrijf de garantie bieden dat hun zakelijke activiteit er niet onder zal lijden ondanks de vele oproepen van sommige rechtse fracties en politici om het bedrijf te boycotten.

We waren ook ontsteld over het feit dat de Israëlische en Joodse media een zeer belangrijk feit uit de oorspronkelijke verslaggeving hebben weggelaten: namelijk dat de klacht van een Israëlische passagier afkomstig was. Hij vroeg om het product niet langer aan te bieden omdat het wordt gemaakt in een illegale nederzetting. Volgens ons werd dit feit niet toevallig weggelaten en proberen de Israëlische regering en mainstream media al lang om kritische stemmen die zich verzetten tegen het Israëlische bezettings- en nederzettingenbeleid, het zwijgen op te leggen zowel in Israël zelf als in de Joodse gemeenschappen in de rest van de wereld. Door de beslissing van Brussels Airlines te steunen, drukken we ook onze andere ambities uit, met name de beëindiging van de bezetting, de ontmanteling van de nederzettingen en gelijke rechten voor alle Palestijnen. Dit is de enige manier om vrede te brengen in de regio.

אנו, החתומות והחתומים מטה, מביעים את תמיכתנו בהחלטה של חברת "בריסל איירליינס" להסיר מתפריט המזון המוגש בטיסותיה מוצר אשר מיוצר בהתנחלות ישראלית לא חוקית הממוקמת בשטחים הכבושים. כישראלים ויהודים מן התפוצות החיים בבלגיה, יחד עם יהודים שנולדו וגדלו בבלגיה, אנו מודאגים ביותר מהמדיניות הנמשכת של ממשלות ישראל לדורותיהן המעמיקה את הכיבוש באמצעות הרחבת ההתנחלויות בגדה המערבית. לכן, אנו תומכים בכך שחברות אירופאיות ימלאו אחר תקנות האיחוד האירופי המורות ליידע צרכנים בדבר מוצרים שיוצרו בהתנחלויות בשטחים הכבושים, ואנו תומכים בהסרה של מוצרים אלו מהשוק האירופי.

הופתענו לגלות כי הדיווחים על התקרית בתקשורת הישראלית ובכלי תקשורת יהודיים באנגלית השמיטו עובדה שצוינה בבירור בהודעה המקורית שנשלחה לתקשורת בנושא: הפנייה ל"בריסל איירליינס" בבקשה להוריד מתפריטה את המוצר שמקורו בהתנחלות נשלחה על-ידי נוסע ישראלי. אנו מאמינים כי השמטה זו לא הייתה מקרית, כיוון שממשלת ישראל לצד כלי תקשורת רבים מנסים להשתיק את הקולות הביקורתיים, בישראל ובקהילות היהודיות בעולם, המתנגדים לכיבוש ולמדיניות ההתנחלות. באמצעות תמיכתנו בהחלטתה של "בריסל איירליינס" אנו מביעות ומביעים את שאיפתנו לסיום הכיבוש, פירוק ההתנחלויות והענקת זכויות מלאות ושוות לכל בני העם הפלסטיני, כיוון שזו הדרך היחידה להשגת שלום צודק באזור.
