We the undersigned strongly support HCS, a community-based public charter school initiated by parents and community members. We believe the proposed curriculum offers a vital alternative public school choice in Vallejo, which will enhance our growing city. HCS will use a project-based learning model called Expeditionary Learning, an innovative instructional approach with a nationally proven track record, to teach children teamwork, leadership, respect and a love of learning, all while covering the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic.

Part of being a good parent is ensuring that you have chosen the right path for your child's education. We all know that not every child is the same in regards to learning. There is nobody that knows a child better than his/her parents. Therefore we need to have the resources available such as HCS to make the best decision for our children and their future. Lack of options has been one of the biggest reasons for parents to look outside VCUSD. I personally have chosen to homeschool this year because I feel my options are limited. I do not want to have my child forced into a curriculum that I dont believe suits his/her personality or way of learning. Please, for the wellfare of all our children give us the oppurtunity to be the best parents we can be by letting us have this option.

The school will provide a much-needed choice for parents in Vallejo and surrounding districts. My family has lived in the community for six years and we have followed the tremendous challenges faced by the Vallejo and other urban school districts. To me a school such as the Hiddenbrooke Community School would be a positive option needed by the students of this diverse district and would enhance the public education available here. I feel strongly that the program they have chosen, Expeditionary Learning, is right for this community. The school's goal to prepare children to be successful in exceeding the California student achievement standards is highly attainable with this project-based learning model because it allows teachers to engage students in learning in a number of hands-on ways. In addition, the school's emphasis on developing a positive learning environment and school culture, on building self-esteem and leadership, on fostering civic and environmental stewardship, and, most importantly, on creating a culture of success for all students, is what our students really need. I believe HCS is a high-quality school model that the district may look to emulate as it comes out of its financial troubles and works to improve student achievement and accountability. A charter school like HCS would be a good complement to Vallejo's traditional public schools because it offers parents choice and opportunity for involvement, offers teachers and administrators the freedom to innovate, and requires accountability. It will be a school that all of Vallejo can be proud of. I urge you to approve the Hiddenbrooke Community School.
