Name: Geoff Stilwell on Oct 7, 2009Comments: I do not think the council have really thought through the implications of these cuts. UK Online Centres are ideally placed to alleviate and overcome the effects of the recession by helping train people to become more employable, giving them skills and confidence to work towards regeneration.Flag

The idea of limiting such a valuable and beneficial service seems absolutely ludicrousFlag

Name: Joanna Stuart on Oct 7, 2009Comments: As a volunteer at the Shell Centre (one of the Camden online centres) I see first hand the difference that the classes these online centres provide. Through these classes local communities develop their skills and confidence in using computers which is not only crutial in helping them into employment (job searches, developing CVs etc) but is vital in helping them to access key services including those provided by the local authority. For some, the centres provide an important community hub where they can meet others. I am shocked that at a time when we need to focus more on supporting people into jobs and developing the skills of local communities that the budget for UK Online Centres could be cut.Flag

Name: John Boyle on Oct 8, 2009Comments: As the SHELL Centre UK Online manager i see the importance of these centres to the community on a daily basis. Only yesterday i have heard from 2 people studying English here who have got jobs and came back to tell me how important the shell centre was to them. This kind of cut will damage the infra-structure of the Camden network which supports 16 centres. Some centres will inevitably close and jobs lost. If Camden are serious about engaging with residents using online services they should be supporting this service not cutting it.Flag

It would be devestating for those who need local access to use the UK Online centres that provide this most valuable service.Flag

Name: George Binette on Oct 8, 2009Comments: Especially at a time of high and still rising unemployment in an inner London borough where a substantial proportion of the population has literacy and numeracy difficulties, the proposal to slash the UK-Online seems extraordinary and suggests that Camden Council is already pursuing the call of Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, to pursue "savage" cuts in public sector expenditure.Flag

Name: Mark Gaughran on Oct 9, 2009Comments: I think the decision by Camden council is at best wrong and at worst short sighted. The proposed cuts to both online centres and libraries would be a retrograde step to the communities that they serve. People in these communities are usually on the lowest social scale and rely on the services that can be provided, services such as benefit information, which given that most information seems to be geared away from printed information. Having worked in a centre which was forced to close due to financial problems, and presently volunteering at SHELL centre administering UK Online services I have seen first hand the benefits that these centres can provide to the local community that is served. For me to be able to work and volunteer in these centres has given me personally a great deal of pride and belief in myself having spent ages without work. With these cuts it is inevitable that these centres will have to reduce there opening times or even worse have to close altogether. What purpose is that going to serve to the community I would ask you to reconsider your decision to cut a service which is valued by all in the communities that are served.Flag

Not everybody owns their own computer or has an internet connection. These centres and their helpful skilled staff provide a very important service especially at this time of rising unemployment in Camden.Flag

I am one of those left behind, but since I have been attending this course I have gained confidence and knowledge in using the computer and have opened a new world to me. This is a vital service and shoud be given full financial backing.Flag
