Petition:
Help show your support by signing this petition for Cal Poly's head soccer coach Wolfgang Gartner who has selflessly dedicated himself over the past quarter of a century to Cal Poly and the San Luis Obispo community. The university has decided to NOT renew Wolf's contract for next season due to his recent win/loss record. However, it is difficult to point to a win/loss record as justification for not renewing a contract when a coach and program is trying to compete with other schools that operate on nearly twice the resources available. This lack of support impacts recruiting as well as the day-to-day operations of producing a successful program. For most of Wolfgang's 27 years coaching, Wolfgang propped up a men's athletic program that did not get the support it was due from its university. I am sure we all have stories, but I remember barbequing hot dogs as a red shirt freshman in Mustang Stadium on a hibachi grill and selling them to raise money for the program. Even now the team is still supplemented through tremendous fund raising efforts at 7-a-side, the Alumni Game weekend, and charitable contributions. It is important the Athletic Department and President Baker understand win/loss record is not a viable reason for releasing Wolfgang, and that he produced more than could be expected with what support the university provided.
