We the undersigned call on lawmakers to end their attack on teachers in Virginia and do what is right for Virginia’s school children.

During this legislative session, lawmakers passed a tax credit bill creating a new entitlement for private schools at taxpayer expense. They approved cuts in teachers’ retirement benefits and tried, without success, to make it easier to fire veteran teachers with no reason given.

These attacks come as Virginia has fallen to 41st in the nation in class size and state per-pupil funding of public schools dropped below the level five years ago. We should be applauding the many accomplishments of Virginia’s teachers, not targeting them with demoralizing and unfounded assaults.

We call on members of the Executive and Legislative branches of Virginia government to cease their attacks on our education professionals and to invest in today’s students, who will become tomorrow’s workers in a global economy. And we ask them to begin now by investing in a manner that appropriately reflects the high value of K-12 education.

41st in the nation is embarrassing. Virginia needs to get it together and stop treating education like an afterthought.

Public schools are falling apart while they hand out tax credits to private schools. This is total nonsense.

Pay our teachers what they actually deserve! They deal with so much already without the state trying to take away their benefits.
