An article in the Omaha World Herald on Thursday, February 9, 2012, entitled, “Battle over Birth Control Heats Up,” has caused concern and frustration among students at Creighton University School of Law. We were disappointed to learn that given its intellectual tradition, Creighton would endorse legislation by Representative Jeff Fortenberry. President Obama revised his original stance on contraception coverage in health insurance provided by religiously-affiliated institutions. The new policy does not require religiously-affiliated employers to provide contraception coverage to women, but rather allows employees at such institutions to get such coverage directly from health insurance companies. A broad group of religious leaders, including prominent Catholic intellectuals, the former vice president of the National Association of Evangelicals, and the former president of the National Council of Churches, support President Obama’s revised policy and called it “a major victory for religious liberty and women's health.” Faithful America, an online community motivated by faith to take action on the pressing moral issues of our time, applauded the Obama administration’s solution to “protect the conscious rights of religious organizations and ensure that all women have access to contraception.” President Obama has demonstrated that religious liberty and women’s health do not have to be in conflict. Creighton University is well-known for its progressive Catholic tradition that forms women and men of competence, conscience, and compassion. It brings Ignatian values to bear on the most contemporary issues of our society. It prepares and inspires students to be active, informed, and responsible citizens locally and nationally. The Catholic Health Association announced its endorsement of President Obama’s policy on Friday, February 10, 2012. The below signed students wish to respectfully voice their dissent to Creighton’s position on contraception coverage in its health insurance, and we strongly urge Creighton University to adjust its position and follow the Catholic Health Association’s brave example.
