Factory farming of animals is the number one cause of climate change, and eating meat contributes to health problems in students and supports cruelty to animals. In particular, animal farming produces 40% more greenhouse gases than the entire transportation sector. The University of Toronto can do its part to combat these issues by serving only eco-friendly, healthy, and delicious meatless meals for one day each week. By supporting Meatless Mondays rather than simply offering vegetarian options on campus, it will encourage a positive start to the week so that bad habits can be replaced with healthy and positive decisions. It will inspire students, faculty and staff to learn more about how their food choices impact their own health, the planet, and animals, and gives people the impetus they need to break out of the habit of consuming animal products for three meals a day. We believe that the University of Toronto can become a leader in Toronto and Canada by adopting Meatless Mondays on its campuses.
