On January 13, 2014, Governor Chris Christie vetoed a bill which would provide the Transgender and Intersex population of New Jersey with the right to change their birth certificate without the need to undergo Gender Confirmation Surgery. Because these surgeries are often not covered by insurance, they are too frequently unobtainable due to the high financial burden it places on those who desire it. Additionally, not all Trans identified and Intersex people want surgery, and requiring them to undergo physical altercations is unjust and discriminatory.

A birth certificate is an important way to identify oneself, and it is very difficult for Transgender and Intersex people to obtain employment, get a license, or undergo any other legal process if their birth certificate does not match their gender identity, not to mention that requiring those individuals to constantly explain themselves can lead to humiliation and even danger of physical harm and discrimination.

I urge you to sign this petition if you feel that Transgender and Intersex people deserve fair and equal treatment under New Jersey State Law, and should be granted the right to obtain a new birth certificate in concordance with their gender identity.
