By signing this petition, I support the 4 conditions of Fair Open Access adopted by Ling-OA:

• The title of the journals remains with the editorial board or a learned society.

• The publisher does not simultaneously charge open access fees and collect subscription fees from libraries for the same journal (so-called ‘double dipping’).

• The copyright remains with the author, and a CC-BY license applies.

• Article processing charges (APCs) are low, transparent, and in proportion to the services provided by the publisher.

We build the data, transform them into (hopefully) meaningful analyses , we share them into articles, we evaluate them in referee reports... all that in a non profit philosophy. Science belongs to everyone.

It is about time that this happens. In no other branch employees are expected to work without pay - and that in a company with perhaps the highest profit rates. 30 %, isn't it?

I have probably written 500 referee reports for no pay. I notice that the subscription charges I paid for the journals I helped never came down.

It would be great it the LingOA website can provide links to and/or collaboration with other OA journals in linguistics that meet 2 or more of the criteria. This way, the petition and the initiative to support fair OA in linguistics could have wide-spread and longer term influence on the ecology of publication in our field.

All four of these clauses are eminently reasonable, and no reasonable publisher would argue against any of them. (They also apply to journals in fields other than linguistics.)

For those of us working in developing economies, prohibitive APCs prevent us from sharing our work -- and lack of open access prevents our growing population of university students from engaging with material that is relevant to them. OA is the only way.
