Many countries have broken ties and have had disputes over property that they believe is rightfully theirs. For instance, the quarrel between Greece and Britain over the Elgin Marbles has caused quite a controversy. The disputes between Greece and Britain over the Elgin Marbles have been going on for centuries. In 1801, the Ottoman Empire was ruling Greece and the eradication of the Elgin Marbles to Britain by Lord Elgin was said to be lawful by the British. During the time Greece was under the control of the Ottoman Empire, they were obliged to relinquish their claim in trying to keep the Marbles in Greece. Today, since Greece is an independent nation, Greece is under the impression that they were wronged and deserve their Marbles back. John Merryman describes in an article in The American Journal of International law that despite the countries enthusiasm for other kinds of export trade, most source nations vigorously oppose the export of cultural objects. He goes on to state that almost every national government treats cultural object within its jurisdiction as parts of a national cultural heritage. Many people are not aware of what cultural property is and what kinds of issues are involved between a variety of countries this is why we are asking for your support to make a space around USF’s campus to make others aware of cultural property.
