The prevalence of eating disorders in the western world is increasing. Approximately three in every one hundred Australian females meets the diagnostic criteria for anorexia or bulimia nervosa. Children between the ages of 8 and 11 are more frequently being diagnosed with eating disorders. Disordered eating is becoming a social norm in Australia with 90% of girls and 68% of boys aged 12-17 years old, participating in it. Our mission at the Be-You-tiful Organisation is to promote positive body image in our primary school aged children. We aim to empower them with the confidence they need to be whoever they want be, without the societal pressures surrounding personal appearance getting in the way. Our vision is to have every child celebrate their differences and accept and love themselves exactly as they are.” We aim to create an awareness of the issue of eating disorders in our young people. Our long term aim is to have our health body image and living program implemented as a compulsory part of Victorian primary school curriculum. Please support us by signing our petition, which will be presented to the Victorian Department as part of a report to help implement the program into the primary school curriculums.
