Support application for the River Ouse to become a designated area for bathing.

Prompted by concerns over water quality and a rise in interest in swimming and other water sports, an application is being made to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) for the River Ouse to become a designated area for bathing. This petition seeks to specifically gain support from residents in the Lewes area who swim in the Ouse or who would like to if the water quality was improved.

Discussion

  • Mary Parker I have just taken up kayaking but am afraid of falling because of the risk of infection

  • Jo and Paul Barcombe Mills is awesome (when the water quality is good). Agree that English rivers in general should be more openly accessible to swimmers and paddlers. Wales and Scotland appear to have no issues with rivers as a recreational resource and nor did England in days of yore. Suggested reading - Roger Deakin's 'Waterlog'
