The Petition

It has the power to bridge the gap of religious and racial differences. It is filled with food, drinks, family, friends and some of the best parties associated with the winter season. It is Super Bowl Sunday. What started as a football game to declare an inter-league champion, has evolved to become something larger than Lamar Hunt would have ever imagined when he jokingly proposed the phrase \"Super Bowl\" to then commissioner, Pete Rozelle.

It is a uniquely American event, yet it is celebrated by the entire world. There are few events that transcend space and time (not even the Olympics or religious holidays are celebrated during such a scheduled window). Whether you\'re watching for the enjoyment of the game or the multi-million dollar commercial spots, the Super Bowl is a delicious slice of American unity through diversity – exactly what makes this country so great. Due to the traditions that have long since begun, it is time to formally and officially declare Super Bowl Sunday as an American holiday.

This petition is sponsored by football.com in an effort to create more football fans, and thank those who have long loved this wonderful game. Through its trials, tribulations and continuous evolution, the game of professional football has survived and continues to grow due to the fans. Before NFL superstars found their spotlight, they were fans - and they still are. Before the team owners knew their business, they were fans - and they still are. This petition offers an official thank you to all who have loved the game, and who have unconsciously helped it become what it is today.

Your signature is representative of the beginning of this process, and it is the most important part. For a day to be declared a national holiday by the United States government, it must be presented on the Congressional floor and voted upon. Continue to check football.com for updates, and once an absolute mind-boggling amount of signatures have been amassed, we will march them into the home office of California Representative, Adam Schiff - a hop, skip and jump from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. (As well as share the information with several other United States Congressional Representatives, in an effort to bring the proposed holiday declaration to the floor.) Until then, spread the word.

With great hope and appreciation,

The football.com staff
