K.Nicolson | The Councillors must not be allowed to dodge out of their responsibilities in this matter in the same way as continue to evade their responsibilities of pressing for a Sunday ferry.
Jann Skelly | How can the council justify pubs to be open on Sunday and not the swimming pool ? As a Christian I cannot see the problem with the Sports Centre being open on a Sunday as we all have freedom of choice and God has given us freedom of choice. The council must feel they are above God to take this decision away from the people ! One more question....is there a different council in Uist and Barra to the one in Lewis and Harris ???
Christine Morrison | It's discrimination that you can go for a swim in the pools in Uists and Barra but not in Lewis and Harris. I used to go swimming regularly on a Sunday morning when I lived in the central belt and it set me up for the day - how I'd love the chance to do the same here. It's outrageous that we're not given the opportunity to exercise in a facility that was built for that purpose and opened its doors to the public less than three years ago. Those who don't want to use a facility don't have to, a bit like the airport, the pubs and the restaurants that are open on a Sunday, oh yes and the churches too....

scott mcneil | What reason do the Comhairle offer for non opening on Sundays ?
Alayne Barton | I fully support the idea of the sports centres in Lewis and Harris opening on Sundays - I lived on South Uist and sunday opening has not had any adverse effect on those islands.
hannah | i dont see why it is not open it is silly !
E MacInnes | I pay the same Council Tax as people in Uist and Barra and should have the same choices. We can drink in the bars but not use the gym. Very unfair.

Anonymous | I visited friends in Stornoway three years ago and was didappointed not to be able to use the leisure/sports centre facilities on the Sunday during my holiday.
Anonymous | think its about time, that the people who wish to use this service, have the choice to, its not every body's cup of tea to do it, but people should have right to choose. we can fly off the islands on a sunday, go fill out cars with petrol, but alcohol, i think its time that we have the right to choose if we want to go to the gym, or swim. or even go to church, every body has a right to choose these things. come on, lets go swimming.
Saranne Slater | It's all a matter of choice, right now we don't have any, it's time this changed.
Lorna M. Campbell |
| 417 | Norman Mackenzie | To continue to deny children access to excersise on any given day of the week may be the position of some people on the Isle of Lewis.
Personaly, i like most people in the democracy of the United Kingdom that our fore fathers died to protect. insist that no person challenge the rights of our children. |

Martin Taylor | The Great Architect owns the other six days as well
Garry Morrison | This will be a btter option than getting drunk on a Sunday.

calum caddy, aka crocus | i dont know if my sis marina will b 2 happy she works there, shes probably all for it as long as she doesnt have to work,im all for it
Karyn Morrison | It will be positive for young people
Anonymous | In addition to the ethic questions raised by preventing families etc from doing healthy things together, surely the council denying Sunday use of the sports centre is in breach of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 18 if I remember rightly) - by imposing their religious views on onthers.

David Rigby | The Western Isles officially has THE highest incidence of cardiovascular premature death in Scotland. Lack of physical exercise is a factor in this terrible statistic. Exercise can reduce cardiac risk by half according to official Scottish guidance (SIGN). With six day a week working for many Sunday opening is an essential component in rectifying this unhealthy state of affairs.
Stuart Baird | It would be easier than having to travel all the way to Balivanich to swim!

Anonymous | If people have the right to choose NOT to use this facility, if it were to open on Sundays, shouldn't the vast majority of our population have the right to choose TO USE it if they so wish. The council is meant to represent the views of all the people, so far our concil are only proving that they are only able to support the views of the minorites, many people will soon lose faith in the council if it continues to fail to represent all the people of the Western Isles. Similar problems exist regarding issues such as windfarms and sunday ferrys: yet the council still persists in representing the views of the minorites.
Murdo MacAulay | Essentail that kids have somewhere to exercise 7days a week if they so wish, especially in the long wet winter months
Margrit Macleod | Family access to the Stornoway pool on Saturdays is limited by fun sessions and men only sessions, it would be such an asset to be able to use the Sports Centre on Sundays. After spending millions you'd think we'd be allowed to use the facilities.

Diana Briscoe | I am very disappointed at the lack of concern by the council for the health and wellbeing of the people of Lewis and Harris. Providing sunday access to the sports centre would be of huge benefit to all residents, particularly children and families and older people.
Sandra Macrae |
John Macleod |
Elisabeth Dunne | Sometimes Sunday is the only day a family can spend time together and the Sports Centre should be open. I am regular churchgoer but feel that this facility should be available - after all, those who don't wish to use it, don't have to - it's called freedom of choice!!!
Susan McGrath |
Karen Dawson |
David Mackay | Do as we say, not as we do - its the attitude of the minority that is inflicted on the majority. A small number of people in extremely powerful positions control everything that happens in these islands - Its nothing to with religion and all to do with power. Its OK to drive to church but not OK to swim? Its OK to cook a 3 course Sunday lunch but not to go for a walk on the beach? Its OK to watch Songs of Praise but not to watch Eastenders? Its OK to go to the pub but not to go for a swim? The situation is ridiculous. As I said, nothing to do with religion and everything to do with control and power. If these people were genuine Christians they would not behave the way the currently do.
