C MacLeodIt is time the council provided the services and facilities they are obliged to provide, regardless of their own (or those they are frightened of) religious beliefs. The public are free to make their own decisions about how they spend their free time everywhere else in this country. Why are we so different in Lewis and Harris? The council have warned Cal Mac not to introduce a Sunday ferry (the Convenor is on the Cal Mac board), the Stornoway Trust are not inclined to accept the wishes of the golf club members to play their game on a Sunday(the chairman of the trust is a council member and self professed christian) and the Vice Convenor has stated on national television that no member of the public has asked for a change in the opening hours of the sports centres. There has been a debate about these issues in the newspapers for months if not years. We have been quiet for too long. The council is not our boss. It works for us. It is supposed to provide services, roads, lighting, housing and many other facilities including those that enhance our health and well being. It is not there to make moral decisions for us. The Western Isles would be a lovely place to live if the people were given the opportunity to make their own decisions and were free to spend time off from work in their own way. Come on councillors!! Open the sports facilities, keep out of the Cal Mac decision making process and if you have strong religious beliefs and feel that the rest of us have no say in what goes on in our lives then declare an interest and keep out of the debate.
Rebekah BellEqual rights for all, hmmm !!! We can all eat, drink and make merry on a Sunday, if we so wish. We can all attend church on a Sunday, if we so wish. Unfortunately our children cannot get a dip in the pool or a game of badminton on a Sunday, if they so wish !!! PE is a very small part of the school cirriculum these days so give the kids a change to be active in the way they wish to, please.

John HorneKeep up the good work Elma, It's time for BIG changes to take lewis & harris out of the dark ages. JH
Alistair J MacLeodWhy is it ok for the council to allow the sports facilities to open in the Southern Isles but not in Stornoway? Give us the choice!

AnonymousThey would be better at the swimming than the pubs

Angela SmithI feel that this is a basic service and should be available to those who want it. I don't understand why people are against it.
Kenny MacLeanIt is outrageous that this council inflict a particular religious outlook on everybody. people have the right to decide for themselves. The WIC treat this place like their own little religious principality: instead of a convenor and councillors they should re-label themselves as a Pope and his Cardinals.

David J smithi am a young person who decided to stay on this island, and not go off to the mainland, as did many of my friends. Sometimes i ask myself why? this island seems to be a good place for old people to come and die. no one wants to hear what the young ones have to say. what are yous frightened of, change?? look at engies and the airport, they have become a normal way of life on a sunday, just like church, for some.

Brian ChaplinIn terms of families doing things together it's ironic that sports facilities are shut, whilst the pubs are open. Bit hypocritical
Nikki ErringtonThe sports center should be avaliable to everyone on a sunday, choices can be and will be made by individuals if they wish to go. In an age where health and fitness is so paramount and childrens obesity levels are so high this could make a real difference.
Jac MacMillan110% behind this!

Mrs. Gordon-MackenzieGive the people of Lewis and Harris equity; restore the privileges that their Southern Isles neighbours enjoy!
AnonymousThe argument that religion has nothing to do with this stance is somewhat transparent. Credit your electorate with some intelligence please. I wonder if members of the Sports Centre in Stornoway and Tarbert should point out that if the Comhairle refuses to open on Sundays, we should be entitled to a 1/7th refund on our membership fees?
A M MackintoshAs a councillor I campaigned in chambers for the opening of the sports centre on Sunday ,as I believe that we all have the right to choose what we do on any day of any week. I also believed that what was good for the Southern Isles should also apply to the Western Isles
