Sandra MacDonald | Please let us use the sports centre on Sundays. It's ridiculous keeping it closed on the one day most people are free to use it. Give people Freedom of Choice and end the religious oppression rampant in these islands. If someone doesn't want to use the sports centre no one is going to force them. Don't let them stop those who do. It's not even in a residential area so that excuse isn't valid. As for it not being economically viable - yet again our wonderful council demonstrates it's stupidity to the world. Sunday is the one day everyone is free to use the place if they so choose. It is likely to be the busiest day of the week. Why should people's health be jepordized because of other people's narrow mindedness and inflated sense of self importance?

joan murray | Better to have sport centre open than the pubs.
duncan macdonald | I feel that facilitiies should be available for those that wish them seven days a week.

c t m m mackenzie | I believe the positive benefits would greatly outweigh any currently perceived or potentially negative effects of opening the sports centre on Sundays.
Colm Rice | I feel the opening of the sports centres facilities on Sunday could only be beneficial to the health and wellbeing of the community and patronage of any such facilities should be the choice of the individual.
Alasdair Macinnes | We are paying the council to have this facility so it should be open every day.

Davidson Family | Can't see anything negative about the prospect of enjoying sport when most families are together
| 468 | Andrew Mellon | Having previously lived there for 7 years, and visiting often, I can understand the frustration of residents at being unable to partake in this and other healthy recreational pursuits, on the one day they may have time.
Considering what pursuits are permitted on Sundays (pubs etc), it appears on the face of it to have no justification at all. Perhaps the Council could explain otherwise.
I'm sure the people will make their choices next time they are given the chance to elect their representatives. |

Paul Sammons | Please open the sports facility on a Sunday. There is a council initiative to increase the population of the Western Isles. I would expect their vision to include reasonable expectations regarding facilities for incomers as well as the oppressed locals.

Anonymous | Yes i agee to sports centre open on a sunday as that is the only time some have to go to the gym!!!

stephan smit | I think all of us who sign the petition should volunteer to be trained as life guards, and volunteer to give up our Sundays on a rotational base to open the Sports Centre. That way the Council won't have to force people to work on Sundays who don't want to do so.

Mal Macleod | The comments from the council are completely hypocritical - all they are afraid of is the backlash from the vocal religious minority and possible loss of votes. All ammenities should be open 7 days - it is up to individuals whether to make use of them

Gail Cunningham | As a GP on Lewis it is difficult to encourage patients to take increased exercise when the sports facilities are closed on Sundays.

Ian Stewart | Does this council understand the meaning of democracy?? It means equal rights and privileges for all.
joe engebretsen | it's simple enough- ask the sports centre users what they want, ask the staff if any of them are interested in working for a few hours, respect peoples wishes not to use the facility or work on a sunday, if the facility is in demand and staff are willing ,open it, if there is no interest from staff or customers, don't. we must respect peoples wishes who are not for it as they should respect the views of those who are.while i'm on the subject i think the council should provide this service(which is what it is) at a better deal financially , with proper incentives for members, earlier opening times and encouragement for family packages. if the sports centre was a private businessbeing run the way it is it would have gone belly up years ago. if there was any competition in stornoway the sports centre would not get away with operating easy-osy opening times and 6 day a week service. i feel sorry for the sports centre staff as they are in the firing line of the general public, many of whom have had experience of sporting facilities that are operated to the benefit of the customer rather than getting tied up with "council policy" "the amenity of the locality" etc etc. there, that's my rant for the day

margaret engebretsen | the sports centre should be open for those who wish to use it and staffed by those who are happy to work on a Sunday

Anonymous | The residents (and visitors) of the Island should have the option to use the facility if they so like. Any objectors can stay at home eating pies!
EoinSmith | I feel that the sport centre should be open on Sundays as it's one of two days off that families get together and it would give people who work Monday to Fridays a good opportunity to use the facilities on offer and be able to do something productive with their kids. I mean, I can go and get as drunk as I like on a sunday, but can't go for a swim or use any gym equipment. Where's the logic?
