Name: Suzanna Shubeck on Jun 24, 2009Comments: Banked increases are a huge financial burden on low-income renters like myself. When my landlord banked my yearly increases from $500 a month to $700 a month, I was faced with a 40% increase in my monthly rent. I am not opposed to reasonable increases, but they must and should be done yearly or biennially to accommodate renters of limited means.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jul 5, 2009Comments: I have lived and worked as an apartment manager for the last 20 years without pay I had a rent allowance and was paying $100 per month rent as I am now almost 67 years I applied for social security but was told I do not have enough credits I engaged an atorney who notified my employer that she intended to file a law suit my employer then dismissed me. We went to mediation and agreed to an amount but in order to get that amount I now have to have the bulk of that award paid into a "rent fund" from which my rent is to be deducted for the next 5 years my rent has been increased from $100 a month to $1,100 per month (the base rent of my original lease agreement $760 plus 20 years of banked rent increases also if I wish to take the money that was agreed to I must pay a penalty of first 2 years 10% next 2 years 7% and the last year 0% I must also vacate the apartment and because I have signed this agreement I have to give up my rights as a protected tenant and also my husbands rights. I have been told that I cannot appeal to the rent board as this agreement superseeds any rights I may have had with the rent board. so Iam now in the position of having no job no social security no money and an apartment that I must pay $1,100 per month for due to banked rent increases PLEASE PASS THE LIMIT ON BANKED RENT INCREASES it will not help me but hopefully it will help the next person who finds themselves in a similar position. By the way the attorney who negotiated this deal ends up with over $60,000 she wanted it settled quick as she needs the money. I must remain anonymous as I had to sign a confidentiality clauseFlag

People in this situation are victims of forces beyond their control and the perpetrators of this current condition and not suffering one bit.Flag
