# Your Postal CodeComments/Ideas
AnonymousAs a resident of the DTES, I witness first hard every day the need for homeless shelters. There must be a place for homeless people to receive aid, otherwise the very serious problems we currently have will only get worse. We have a school across the street from us; people are often passed out by the front steps after shooting up near the side entrance; by ignoring the homeless situation, the govt is condoning the use of a learning institution for our future leaders to be a homeless shelter. What message is that sending to our kids that attend this school?
AnonymousI think that this would be a great use of Storyeum's space and an excellent step in addressing the homeless problem rather than the historical approach of ignoring it.
v5l 2s1I see clearly now the necessity of providing immediate shelter for the homeless as opposed to long term idea of social housing. This of course can take years and we must deal with the immediate problems facing those who live on the street now. Good luck Audrey on this noble undertaking

v5l3a3i do believe action must be taken to provide affordable social housing for low income and homeless individuals and families. this is an embarassment to the country as a whole and an issue that must not be ignored any longer. social housing benefits the individuals directly as well as the community as a whole. if storyeum is a location that will be beneficial as housing them im all for taking action and making it happen! great work!

v2v 1a4It appears any compassion in government is nonexistent. As we all sit down at a good meal, retire in a warm comfortable bed, we fail to know the bitter reality of sleeping in a cold tent or makeshift shelter, trying to sleep with knawing hunger pains in damp and sour, mouldy covers. Going to school with clothing from a charity. Our masters should experience this and maybe they will not be so cynical in their ignorance and blind approach to these defenceless people. Or, is this a panacea fro their own inadequacies?
v2v1a4:Last night I went to the Women's shelter across OP Park to deliver some food that was donated to me and there was sign up : "no more blankets." This shelter is temporary and it was full. The women roam the streets all day as they are forced out at 7:00 in the morning and the shelter doesn't open again until 11:30 at night. In the morning they are given porrige and tea for breakfast and at 11:30 pm they are given a weak soup. How can anyone get off the street when there is no where to sleep adequately or eat properly.
AnonymousThere is no reason that this huge unused space should not be used in a proactive way. I would much rather have homless people in this place than encourage the automotive culture and create a huge parking lot. If this was tuned into a shelter then a larger problem would have some help.

V6A 3Z1With so many people sleeping in the streets and a lack of shelter space this does not seem like an unreasonable demand. JWL

AnonymousAlthough I do not live in Vancouver proper, I frequent the downtown often enough to know homelessness is a tragic issue there. Every time an opportunity to house a few more people is turned down by the city, I puzzle at WHY NOT?!? We need to implement short-term solutions for today before focusing on long-term solutions for tomorrow.

V6E 1V7Any buildings that are vacant should be used for the homeless. I know Audrey has a true passion for the cause of homelessness and this is why I have voted for her today. Tina
AnonymousGood idea. Hopefully the new council will have some decency and sense!
v2p5x8There definitely is a need now that Riverview and Crease clinic are no longer. Good luck with the proposal.

Anonymousmaybe storyeum can not only serve as a homeless shelter to house the homeless, but that it becomes a community centre of some sort where the homeless can begin to grow their own community. this allows them to make some income and develop themselves as working people again and improve their lifestyle. that way they can begin to live a normal life again and reach out to others alike.
