The petition

This petition seeks support of the formation of a law to strictly limit expenditures toward posting names of officials subject to election in government, particularly where inclusion of the name is non-essential to the purpose of identification.
Across the country, Millions of our tax dollars are spent needlessly to design, construct, install, and maintain non-essential signage. Non-essential signage refers to any signage built with words or names that are not required for the purpose of identifying title, property, location,or use, particularly, when such signage will require further expense to update when government changes leadership and management.

One example of this waste might be the name of a mayor being included on the doors of every city office, public works vehicles, and city park signage, when simply identifying those items as belonging to the city is appropriate.

Another example might be the addition of the full name of the Secretary of State being added to the front of every building when simply identifying the building as a Secretary of State office is adequate.

Yet another example would be the unnecessary inclusion of a Governor's name on road signage welcoming people to a state when "The people of [State name] Welcome you" is both acceptable and withstands multiple elections without change.

Acceptable and reasonable forms of signage and identificaton are not difficult to define or imagine.

The name of the Mayor posted at City Hall; it identifies the primary workplace of that official.

A vehicle could acceptably be identified as State or County property. Such identification need not change upon election of new officials.

At rare times, posthumous or exaltory signage is produced to honor a significant long-time leader or citizen as recognized by the representative population. Such efforts are generally welcome and may last for many decades, or even centuries.

It is imperative that we take a stand and remind our seated officials wishing to spend taxpayer's money to needlessly paint, paste, and erect their names across our country, that our government and the property it governs is not identified by any one individual citizen, yet rather by the people as a whole.
