Comments: The FBI's own data for 2011 shows that rifles are used only in a 10th of the roughly 5,000 murders committed in 2011. That data shows that shotguns were used about the same number of times and that people were murdered more than 4 times as often just by "hands and feet". The firearms Senator Feinstein has wanted to ban since before 1994 are used in a tenth of the roughly 5,000 murders committed in 2011 so why does she fear these firearms so much when only 1 criminally insane person out of the 314 MILLION became one of the very few people to murder anyone with a rifle? Why does she want to treat over 200 MILLION voters as if they were criminally insane?Flag -

Name: John Muir on Dec 30, 2012Comments: Saying that guns are the reason people kill is like saying cars are the reason people drive drunk. That's just not right. People are the ones who operate these machines, and the ones who decide to do these unthinkable crimes need help. Instead of spending a whole bunch of the taxpayer's money to put a ban on assault rifles, use that money to help people with mental instabilities. Don't punish the responsible gun owners in this country for things that someone mentally unstable does. And if you think about it, banning these weapons really doesn't solve the problem anyway, there are already hundreds of thousands of these weapons out there that people can easily get their hands on. Also, what makes assault rifles any more deadly than another weapon? It's just as easy to pull the trigger of a pistol and kill someone too if you so choose. By banning these weapons, all you would be doing is punishing responsible gun owners in this country from being able to go out and shoot recreationally and in a controlled environment as we do. Criminals by definition are people who decide not to follow the rules or obey the laws. These people are still going to continue doing what they do, and these tragic events will still continue to take place unless we get them psychiatric help. The best thing we can do to improve gun control is mandatory background checks and registration of weapons any time you purchase one, whether it be from a private owner or whomever. Also, required psychiatric evaluations before the weapon is handed over to the buyer to make sure they don't have any ill intentions. And lastly, put a program in place to re-teach gun owners with children about proper gun safety, storage and handling procedures in the home. If we do all of this I believe we would have a much safer society to live in because the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. Putting armed guards in our schools to protect our children is certainly not a bad idea either. We use every means possible to protect other assets and valuables we have but then we send our children off to school where they are completely unprotected. Why? Tighten up school security just like every place else you have valuables and place a few armed guards in the school, and the next time someone decides to try something as unthinkable as the school shooting in Newtown, CT our children will be protected from harm and events like this can be avoided.Flag
