Peter Peacock MSP says, "The SNP Government plan to charge crofters a fee to register their crofts on a new compulsory map based crofters’ register.
"Many crofters feel this would be unnecessary as they are already registered with the Crofters Commission.
"In addition to this, the new Crofting Commission are to be granted new powers to charge crofters for regulatory applications that have previously been free throughout crofting’s history.
"These charges could amount to several thousand pounds.
Highland Labour is arguing these proposals are wrong and that crofters need financial incentives not an increase in financial burdens.
"For nearly 150 years crofting has existed and survived without charges and fees.
"In difficult financial times we need to support crofters in working the land not penalise them."
