Name: William L. (Bill) Jones on Feb 4, 2013Comments: For many years I went to meetings concerning Wilderness Management in Arkansas. Both in the Park Service and the Forest Service. All the science I ever heard was that with the annual rainfall in Arkansas, so called "fuel build-up" was not a real concern. Please save the cost of this ill conceived concept and allow the Wilderness return by itself to its natural state before it was changed by man.Flag

Name: Alice B. Andrews on Feb 5, 2013Comments: AMEN! I fully support the comments in this petition. There is no justification for more burning in the Lower Buffalo Wilderness. I believe that most Wilderness advocates understand the definition of "untrammeled" as described in the Wilderness Act. One passes through designated Wilderness enjoying the serenity and wildness of the place, the opportunity for clarity of thought - and leaves no trace. The few "untouched" acres of wilderness in Arkansas and the U.S. are diminishing in spite of the Wilderness Act. Beyond the highlly controversial act of burning the wilderness, it is a significant waste of National Park Service and Department of Interior funds that could be used to keep access points open, maintain existing campgrounds, restore streambanks, fight invasive, non-native species.Flag

Name: Don F. Hamilton on Feb 6, 2013Comments: Aside from the fact that prescribed burns of wilderness areas are inconsistent with the letter and spirit of the Wilderness Act of 1964, NPS is conducting burns on the lower NPS wilderness area in violation of the provisions contained in management plans for other wilderness areas subject to the same federal law on wilderness areas which are administered by the U.S. Forest Service In Arkansas, including the wilderness areas known as Hurricane Creek, Richland Creek and Leatherwood, the latter of which adjoins the lower BNR in the Ozark National Forest just across the river from the NPS lower wilderness area. Thus, we have two federal agencies (NPS and USFS) in direct conflict of managing lands subject to the same law with the result that NPS is wasting large sums of money on prescribed burns without any benefit or even documentation of the effects or results of the burns done over the past few years.Flag

Name: Ed Bethune on Feb 7, 2013Comments: As a Member of Congress I introduced the House bill that created the Arkansas Wilderness. It breaks my heart to see the bureaucrats doing everything they can to get around the law. It seems all they want to do is "cut and burn." I wrote an article entitled "What Price Elk" that was published in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. It sets out my concerns. The current burn needs to be stopped!Flag

Name: John Beneke on Feb 8, 2013Comments: The Buffalo River has long been a favorite place for family and friends to recreate because of the unspoiled scenic beauty and tranquility due to over 4 decades of being left in its natural state. Plenty examples of managed forests exist within Arkansas - mostly National Forests and privately owned lands. Management of Wilderness Areas should be limited to protection - not manipulation.Flag
