Name: Joy Tober on Dec 8, 2008Comments: Notoriously known as a city ready and willing to demolish its history in the name of progress, Houston has little left in terms of tangible historic structures. Losing half of the River Oaks Shopping Center was devastating to preservationists and neighbors and this blatant disregard of city ordinances and again the needs and wishes of the community is just another slap in the face. While I agree that progress is always a step in the right direction, I do not feel that progress should happen at the expense of our local history. We should take pride in our past not erase it.Flag

The beautiful art-deco center that was destroyed should still be standing. Shame on you Weingarten Realty. You have a long history in Houston and should be more concerned about the historic and beautiful structures you are knocking down just to make money.Flag

Name: Mary Needham on Dec 8, 2008Comments: As president of the Winlow Place Civic Club, I have been made aware of the many times developers in the city have been able to force their personal interests on the unsuspecting populace by acting first, pouring cement and then asking for forgiveness. At some point this ought simply to be stopped. It is reprehensible, devious, sleezebag behavior and at some point I devoutly hope the City will enforce the original expectations and stop granting variances just because these selfish outsiders might lose a few dollars. This type of establishment could only increase danger to families and resiodents of the neighborhood by encouraging more drunk-driving. which any bar establishment undoubtedly does whether indirectly or not. The only interest Weingarten has is the short term profit of shareholders, not the long term, lasting value of historic properties. They should not be granted variances on modified portions of the project that clearly violated local codes/ordinances.Flag
