I listen to a vast assortment of music, including classical, acapella, SKA, pop, punk, reggae, jazz, runk, hardcore, screamo, hip hop, metal, et cetera. I play several instruments myself and find understand how music is made, and what would make it "good" or "bad." Although both are relative terms, perception is a tricky subject.
Schoolyard Heroes is a band. They are just a group of friends who get together and make something out of their time. They have made statements, mostly Jonah, that they just want to give kids a place where they can feel comfortable and free from judgement and persecution for, well EVERYTHING about them. Teenagers are subjected to constant pressure, from their peers, teachers and parents. A desire to fit in with some group and to have friends, to do well in school, there is a constant atmosphere of stress surrounding their lives. Music may be the one place they find comfort, a detachment. This band offers that perfectly. If there is some sort of "Skeleton Army" or cult it is inflicted by the kids themselves, their own ideas, the band did NOT tell them, or plant the idea in their heads to do so.
The lyrics come into question, satanic meanings and evil themes. Who is to say what is good and evil? Who set these standards for everyone, and why was I not informed. Why not take a second and listen to the lyrics of a Ludacris song, or other popular hip hop, or rap songs. They are hardly the idea of a good Christian, yet they boost their religion through symbols. How can you stand the hypocrisy?! They discuss sex, gang violence, and actually seem to encourage it.
Columbine has been mentioned, but here's the real deal. The band encourages parents to talk to their children, understand them better. The kids at the heart of Columbine felt rejected, alone, as if they had no one to talk to, SYH does the opposite. They offer acceptance, and friendship to all- Much like Christianity did in the Roman empire...hmm?
Think for a minute of other musicians who were characterized similarly, or attacked like this The Beatles maybe? Elvis Presly, while now I'm sure parents would practically cream themselves if their children listened to him now. The group ICP has lyrics that are a lot worse, but the culture they breed is that of which preaches charity, equality, friendship, comradary, et cetera.
Most of all, it should be remembered, they are band. They make music, they sing songs, they have fun and make money. They work for everything they get and have, just like everyone else in world with something. So, instead of freaking because your kids are listening to SYH; be glad they aren't doing drugs, or drinking, having sex, et cetera. Worry if your daughter comes home crying, or your son is angry at something, talk to them and try to understand and think about what it was like when YOU were their age. There is some common ground, you just need to find it and stop being a Nazi over their lives. When given the chance, many of them will automatically do the right thing, but first, you have to give them that chance.

If you all honestly think that listening to Schoolyard Heroes is going to severely mess up your children's minds, I think you have more serious problems to worry about (i.e. your own mental health). Schoolyard Heroes are an amazing group of people who want nothing other than to play their music and have people recognize it for what it is, not promote violence, suicide, etc. Their music can indeed be graphic at times ("You're so pretty and you're so dead...-- Plastic Surgery Hall of Fame), however it is not meant to tell us to go out and kill people. I myself am 15 years old, and a sophomore in high school. I consider myself a fairly normal person, only perhaps with a more eccentric taste in music. Schoolyard Heroes is one of my favorite bands, and I admire them for the quality of their musicianship and their creativity. I have been listening to them for several months now, and never have I gotten the urge to kill myself, my family, my friends, or to run away from home. I listen to their music because it is interesting and well played and sung. If your children are running away and attempting suicide, perhaps you should run a self check on your parenting techniques and have them evaluated by a psychologist, not blame their music. My parents don't share my taste in music by any stretch of the imagination, and have never much liked my listening to alternative musicians such as Schoolyard Heroes, Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Ozbourne, etc. but they have never forbade me to listen to them or thought that I was going to suffer because of their music; I am very grateful that they are understanding in that respect. Now please, before you judge your children's behavior to be based solely on their music, have a talk with them and ask them why they are experiencing negative feelings towards you or others, and proceed from there.
