Comments: As a dog rescuer, I am appalled to see that California is trying to pass a bill that would impose annual rabies vaccines for dogs and require quarantining of medically exempt dogs. The rabies vaccine is good for a minimum of three years. Vaccinating a dog annually will NOT increase its protection, but will only decrease a dog's health. Annual vaccinations go against the recommendations of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Plus, the rabies vaccine can be harmful for some dogs. And where is a medically exempt dog be quarantined? Shall it be allowed to remain in the peace of comfort of its home but not allowed to go on walks? How will that help the health of the dog? What about dogs who live in apartments or condos with no yards? Where shall the dog eliminate? Or will people be forced to board their medically exempt dogs? If so, what will happen to the health of the sick dog if it is separated from its loving home and owner? How is the owner supposed to afford this, especially in this economy? Or will this new law force owners to put down their sick dogs due to cost? The Rabies Bill AB2000 is nothing but a knee-jerk reaction to a supposed rabies problem that doesn't really exist. According to data contained in the annual Reported Animal Rabies by County and Species issued by the CDPH, from the period of 2001 through May 7, 2010, only 5 dogs were reported as rabid. I strongly urge you to withdraw Paragraph 2 of the April 5th amendment to AB2000 and strike the language in the current law cited in the bill authorizing the CDPH to impose annual or biennial rabies boosters in so-called "rabies areas."

Comments: This bill is just another push from drug companies to make more money at the risk of our pets health. This goes against the American Veterninary Medical Associations guidlines.
