The Petition

We as tax-paying Americans have generously bailed out numerous banks and financial institutions with over $200 billion of our hard earned money. Collectively, these same institutions, and many others, extort nearly $50 billion every year from the most financially strained Americans.

If an individual with a checking account writes a check or uses a debit card that results in his or her account to become overdrawn by as little as one penny, the bank imposes a $35 fee. Moreover, the bank will abandon its chronological bookkeeping method once the account becomes overdrawn, and rearrange all pending transactions according to dollar amount, from greatest to least. This practice maximizes the banks’ fee potential for every overdraft situation.

If you overdraw your account by one penny and have ten pending transactions, you will have $350 in fees assessed to your account the next morning, sometimes wiping out an entire paycheck.

Please, sign this petition to enact specific legislation that would eliminate these outrageous fees and protect consumers from this deceptive banking practice.
