BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

On February 8, 2010, Superintendent Richard N. Johns proposed the district budget for the 2010-2011 academic year in which he recommended the closing of  Wetzel Road Elementary and eventually Morgan Road Elementary in conjunction with the establishment of academies at Liverpool High School which would re-purpose these elementary schools for use by the high school.  Since the announcement of this plan, parents, residents, staff, and students have strongly objected to these proposed closings and the establishment of the academies.   Their concern is over the lack of appropriate planning with regard to the establishment of the academies, the poor timing based on our financial situation and lack of transparency on the part of Board of Education and District.

PETITION:

We the undersigned residents of the Liverpool Central School District, request that Wetzel and Morgan Road Elementary schools not be closed.  We want the implementation of the academies be limited to the current physical structural boundaries of Liverpool High School (LHS) and the Annex (LHX). We recommend the implementation of the academies be located solely inside the High School on an experimental, trial basis for an appropriate time to determine its effectiveness and true cost.  This approach allows the opportunity to evaluate the academies concept without totally rearranging our district to the point of no return.  We seek the flexibility to return the District back to the current design if we find that the academies concept is not appropriate for our District.  We wish to avoid this major set of proposed changes, which are a serious commitment and cost, presently devoid of appropriate planning and input from all stakeholders in the district community.  Stakeholder involvement is a fundamental piece of other academy plans across the nation.  The District Administrative Team needs to rethink the current plan and adjust the budget accordingly prior to the May 18, 2010 public budget vote.
