My friends, Lydia and Lenny,have lived in their chalet for over 10 years. They own the land, pay all their taxes and are proud to be Christians. They are a Romany family and have spent a lot of money on making sure that the site, which is also home to their children and grandchildren,is clean,beautiful and invisible from the road. They have met every condition asked of them by the local authority. The children attend a school nearby, and the older ones have all attended Bible School.They are a delightful and friendly family, who contribute to economy rather than taking from it. Lydia became my friend when we both attended Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes after being diagnosed with COPD.We both use oxygen cylinders and do our best to get on with life with a smile. Unfortunately Lydia's health has deteriorated during the past year, and she has been admitted to hospital several times. As well as COPD she has a heart condition, and her health has been worsened by the stress she is now under. Lenny had a minor heart attack recently too. It is now time to get permission to renew their right to occupy their own land.Lenny is determined that he will, as usual, do everything 'by the book'.Although the local Planners cannot fault the site, this has been refused. The Council will not give a valid reason for the refusal and time is running out.One Councillor actually claimed that there 'is nothing wrong with Lydia' ( healthwise ) as she had been seen driving a car! Of course she does - she qualifies for a Blue Badge. This comment was made in the face of written evidence from both her Consultant and her GP! The family will soon face being physically dragged out of their home by paid thugs, with nowhere to go.They are sick,over 60,honest taxpayers.They do not live in a caravan, and even if they did it is now illegal to park on the roadside.They will lose their GP, the local hospital Consultant, access to their Church, and for the grandchildren, loss of their school.This petition may well help to delay this until a better solution can be found.
