Dogfighting is disgusting. It\'s horrifying that some people actually bet money to see dogs rip each other apart in a battle of life and death! In the wake of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick\'s indictment on charges related to dogfighting and recent prison sentence of 23 months I want help stop this barbaric blood sport in my state, Tennessee. An article in The Progress our Lexington, TN newspaper wrote that a Dog Fighting Facility was discovered when officers were executing a search warrant Saturday Dec. 8, 2007 to locate illegal drugs. In Purdy, McNairy County officers could hear what sounded like dogs fighting when they entered the property. One dog was attacking a bait dog, an emanciated injured female pitbill not fighting back. The officer said they barely keep it alive so it will let other dogs maul it. Sherrif Roten said this stuff goes on all the time around there. Drug Task Force Agent Michael Gilbert said that with the recent publicity dog fighting has gotten, they were happy to catch them in the act and rescue the dogs. The dogs were turned over to the McNairy County SPCA. Arrested at the scene were Ahmad Shumpert, Adrian Stackens and Cordetto Stackens, all of Selmer TN. Though the arrests were commendable the Dog Fighting Facility was discovered by accident. The fact that Sheriff Roten acknowledged the growing popularity of this atrocity makes clear more effort must be made to stop dog fighting rings in every County of Tennessee. That it happened so close to home is disturbing and shocking. Please sign my petition to encourage all law enforcement in the state of TN to use every resource available to put an end to this barabric blood sport. Stress the importance for the well being of our children and community safety to prosecute these criminals who can also carry illegal drugs and guns. Dog fighting is a serious crime which deserves a maximum prison sentence for everyone involved. There have been murders over gambling disputes relating to dog fights events. Thank you very much for speaking out to help end the suffering and cruel deaths of voiceless victims.
