When Department of Education capitalizes your student loan interest your principal and monthly payment will balloon to an amount that you will not be able to pay back in a timely manner or be able to file a bankruptcy on.

There are ways to get student loans forgiven or discharged in an adversarial bankruptcy.

However, if the DOE simply stopped capitalizing the interest it charges on student loans, student borrowers would be more inclined to payback the loan in a more timely manner and would be less likely to default.
