In recent years, the Navy has been tasked to down size the manpower. The process of selecting which members will be forced to separate from the Navy is by evaluating each Sailor's Perform To Serve (PTS) application. The purpose of Perform To Service was to evaluate each Sailor's performance in the Navy and determine whether or not the service member has the capacity to full the needs of the Navy's Mission and will determine if the service member is eligible for re-enlistment. The goal of Perform To Serve is to separate the stellar performing Sailor from the those who perform below stands. Facially, the motive for implementing this system seems like a good idea. However, in recent years this system has become an epic failure. Rather than separating the service members who does not meet the standards, instead the Navy has separated thousands of Sailors who performs above and beyond and exceeds the Navy's expectations. According to a Military.com article written by Matthew M. Burke he noted that during the selection process, panel members of the board cast their votes to determine who will separated. Burke also notes the deliberation is confidential and records selection process is not released. Thousands of hardworking, motivated, and stellar performing Sailors are forced to separate from Naval Service annually without any explanation as how they were selected. Despite numerous complaints regarding this issue, the Navy continues to look the other way. Rather than calling it Perform To Serve the Navy should rename the system as Prepare To Separate. It is time to take a stand and end the wrongful separation of the Navy's finest Sailors. It's time for PTS reform!
